Some varieties, such as Xinjiang Aksu's 185 paper walnut, have a shell thickness of only 0.6 mm.

Paper walnuts are mainly grown in Xinjiang and Yunnan. The Aksu paper walnut in Xinjiang is particularly famous due to the distinctive local climatic conditions, including drought, low rainfall, long hours of sunshine and slightly alkaline soil. These factors contribute to the abundance of nuts, mellow flavour and sweet taste characteristic of Aksu paper walnuts.
